Top End Rebuild Gasket Kit 

for 1966 to Early 1980 Harley Shovelhead

This is a complete Top End Gasket Kit for the Shovelhead Big Twin from 1966 through Early 1980. It should contain all the gaskets, seals and O-rings you need to put your Shovelhead top end back together securely.

The head gaskets are a flexible material similar to Teflon, reinforced with steel mesh core. The steel mesh is molded into the gasket material so that it would be very difficult for a head gasket to blow out. We measure the thickness at approximately 0.031″ (0.8mm). This type of gasket should allow you to pull the heads off again easily without them sticking.

The Valve Stem Seals in this kit are for the older engines that did not originally have factory-installed seals. This set is made of High Temperature Viton (blue) rubber with a spring-loaded aperture, encased in a steel body. You should find the seals very easy to install. These seals for the older engines are 3/8″ x 0.562″ and normally fit Shovelhead engines from 1966 through Early 1980. However… if someone has machined the casting to install some other size aftermarket seals, these standard replacements (ref. 18001-48) may not fit your engine.
NOTE: This kit does not have the original standard 3/8″ x 0.625″ seals that fit Shovelhead engines from Late 1980 when Harley first starting installing them. That is the only reason this kit does not apply to engines after Early 1980.

For a Late 1980 through 1984 kit that has valve stem seals to replace the original factory-installed seals, please buy one of our other similar kits. For about the same price as this one, our Kit #38438 has only the original factory-installed seal type. Kit #38438A has All the seals – both old and new engine seals to cover all the model years.
